History of World Malaria Day
World Malaria Day is observed every year on 25 April with the main goal of spreading awareness among people for the control, prevention and eventual elimination of malaria.
Abuja Declaration in 2000: On 25 April 2000, leaders of 44 African countries came together in Abuja, Nigeria to reduce malaria deaths by 50 percent by 2010. This commitment thus laid the foundation for Africa’s Malaria Day, first observed on 25 April 2001 to monitor and control malaria on the continent.
Changes to World Malaria Day in 2007: Given the global impact of malaria, the 60th World Health Assembly decided to expand World Malaria Day globally in April 2007 to monitor malaria worldwide and eventually 25 April 2007 was declared World Malaria Day. This led to increased political commitment to malaria worldwide as well as country-wise investments for malaria control.
Malaria ends with us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reinvent
On this World Malaria Day 2025 theme, WHO has given the slogan of Reinvest, Reimagine and Reinvent to end malaria. It aims to put all efforts at the global level and eliminate malaria by taking decisions ranging from global policy to community action.

Malaria is caused by
Plasmodium species (Bite of female Anopheles Mosquito)
Normal Malaria Symptoms
Fever, chills, shivering, sweating, headache, nausea and vomiting, muscle pain, diarrhea, abdominal pain, jaundice, anemia, seizures (in cerebral malaria).
Severe Symptoms of Malaria
Seizures, difficulty in breathing, severe anemia, dark colored urine, organ failure eg. kidney and liver.
Malaria Life Cycle:
1. Sporozoite Stage – Mosquito injects sporozoites
2. Liver Stage – Parasites multiply in liver
3. Schizont Formation – Liver cells burst
4. Erythrocytic Stage – RBCs get infected
5. Gametocyte Stage – Sexual forms develop
6. Mosquito Ingestion – Mosquito drinks blood
7. Fertilization – Zygote forms in gut
8. Ookinete & Oocyst – Development on gut wall
9. Sporozoite Formation – Sporozoites to salivary gland
10. Transmission Again – New mosquito bite
Types of Malaria:
Malaria is caused by five Plasmodium species:
- P. falciparum: Most dangerous, causes severe malaria.
- P. vivax: Causes relapses, common in Asia and Latin America.
- P. ovale: Similar to vivax, rare and found in West Africa.
- P. malariae: Causes chronic infection, less common.
- P. knowlesi: Found in Southeast Asia, can be severe.
P. falciparum is the deadliest form.
Malaria Treatment
Malaria treatment typically involves antimalarial drugs:
For uncomplicated malaria:
- Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs): The most effective for P. falciparum.
- Chloroquine: Used for P. vivax and P. malariae
- Primaquine: For treating liver stages in P. vivax and P. ovale to prevent relapse.
For severe malaria:
- Intravenous artesunate or quinine is used initially, followed by oral ACTs once the patient improves.
