NEET 2026 Postponement Update: The exam may be postponed due to the current situation, check how

Posted on March 24, 2026

There is a significant likelihood that the NEET 2026 examination will be postponed. Currently, the National Testing Agency (NTA) the body responsible for conducting this exam has scheduled NEET 2026 for May 3rd. However, a proposal to alter this previously announced date may be initiated by the NTA.

Why, exactly, might the NEET 2026 examination be postponed? A primary reason cited for this is the ongoing conflict in West Asia. According to reports, a state of war exists between Iran and Israel, resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a critically important strategic location; it is the primary route through which oil and various other commodities are imported into India and other Asian nations.

Consequently, should the war situation deteriorate further, the country could face a shortage of oil. In such a scenario, domestic transportation networks would be disrupted, making it unfeasible to conduct an examination like NEET. It is the largest entrance examination in the country, with hundreds of thousands of students appearing for it.

Recently, Prime Minister Modi stated in a speech that the nation must remain prepared; while the situation may not escalate to the level of the COVID pandemic, transportation services could be significantly curtailed. Under such circumstances, conducting the examination would not be possible.

However, the postponement of the NEET 2026 examination will only occur if the conflict between Iran and Israel persists and the resulting oil shortage adversely impacts the country. It is currently the month of April; if, by the time the exam date approaches, successful diplomatic negotiations take place between the two warring nations along with the United States, which is also involved in this conflict leading to a cessation of hostilities and a resumption of oil imports, then the NEET 2026 examination will proceed as scheduled on its designated date.
