Covid Cases India: 1000+ Active Cases In India (27 May, 2025)

India is witnessing a another spike in COVID-19 cases (Covid Cases India), with several states reporting fresh infections and related casualties. The emergence of new variants like JN.1 and NB.1.8.1 is under close observation by health authorities, although current strains are not considered highly lethal as per the experts around the world, but it is important to stay safe.

In a notable development, Noida recorded its first COVID-19 case this season. A 55-year-old woman tested positive for the virus on Saturday, marking the first confirmed case in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida district. Health officials have initiated contact tracing and advised caution.

India’s Active COVID Case Count Crosses 1,000

According to the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (as of 8 AM IST, May 27, 2025), the country has a total of 1,010 active COVID-19 cases. This marks a steady increase compared to previous weeks.

COVID-19 Death in Rajasthan: Case Count Rises to 23

Rajasthan reported a COVID-related fatality, where a 26-year-old man from Jaipur succumbed to the virus. The individual had been receiving treatment for tuberculosis and other chronic health issues over the past two months. He tested positive on May 24 and died on May 25.

The state’s Medical and Health Department confirmed the death on May 26. On the same day, eight new cases were logged across the state:

  • Jodhpur: 4 cases (3 from AIIMS, 1 from SNMC)

  • Jaipur: 3 cases (Rajasthan Hospital, B Lal Hospital, and EHCC)

  • Udaipur: 1 case (RNT Medical College)

These additions have brought Rajasthan’s total number of COVID-19 cases this year to 23. District-wise breakdown includes:

  • Jaipur: 6 cases

  • Jodhpur: 4 cases

  • Udaipur: 4 cases

  • Didwana: 3 cases

  • Ajmer: 2 cases

  • Bikaner: 1 case

  • Phalodi: 1 case

  • Sawai Madhopur: 1 case

  • Others: 1 case

Officials clarified that the prevalent JN.1 variant, a descendant of the Omicron BA.2.86 lineage, does not appear to cause severe illness in most cases.

Maharashtra and Karnataka Report COVID-19 Fatalities

In Maharashtra, a 21-year-old COVID-19 patient who had been undergoing treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kalwa Hospital in Thane died on May 25, as confirmed by Thane Municipal Corporation.

Karnataka also registered its first COVID-related death of the season on May 24, according to the state Health Department.

Kerala Sees Two Fatalities

Kerala has also reported two deaths linked to COVID-19 in the past week, though health officials have not disclosed further details about the deceased.

State-wise Distribution of Active Cases and Deaths

As per the Ministry of Health data, the states with the highest number of active COVID-19 cases are:

  • Kerala: 430 cases

  • Maharashtra: 210 cases

  • Delhi: 104 cases

So far, seven deaths have been reported from across the country:

  • Maharashtra: 4 deaths

  • Kerala: 2 deaths

  • Karnataka: 1 death

COVID-19 Situation Outside India

The global situation mirrors India’s in several respects. In Thailand, the Department of Disease Control reported 53,563 new infections and five deaths last week, with Bangkok being the hardest-hit area.

In China, case numbers are climbing and may soon reach their peak. A new variant, NB.1.8.1, has been identified as the dominant strain and has also been detected at U.S. international airports, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Symptoms Associated with the JN.1 Variant

The JN.1 subvariant, part of the Omicron lineage, is showing symptoms similar to earlier strains:

  • Fever

  • Sore throat

  • Fatigue

  • Dry cough

  • Loss of taste or smell

However, recent observations, including those from Johns Hopkins, suggest a rise in gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea. Patients have also frequently reported nasal congestion and persistent fatigue.
