Pope Francis Health Update News: 88 years old “Pope Francis”, has been facing a major health challenge since he was recently hospitalized with double pneumonia. Last Friday afternoon, the Pope experienced bronchospasm (a sudden tightening of the airway muscles), which caused him to have difficulty breathing and even vomit. Doctors gave him non-invasive mechanical ventilation to help him breathe.
Despite all this, the Vatican reported that as of Saturday morning, Pope Francis was healthy, conscious and even enjoying a cup of coffee, indicating that he is in good health. However, given his advanced age and medical history including previous lung surgery, doctors are keeping a close eye on him.
What is bronchospasm?
Bronchospasm is a condition in which the muscles of the airways (bronchus) of the lungs suddenly contract, obstructing airflow. The condition causes difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness.
Causes of bronchospasm:
- Respiratory infections – such as colds, flu or pneumonia
- Allergies – dust, smoke, pollen or animal dander
- Asthma and COPD – people with chronic lung diseases are at higher risk
- Stress or exercise – excessive physical exertion or exposure to cold air
Pope Francis, who was undergoing treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for the past two weeks, initially showed improvement in his health, but his condition suddenly deteriorated on Friday afternoon. During this time he vomited and his airways narrowed, seriously affecting his breathing ability. According to the Vatican statement, this medical emergency had a very bad effect on his respiratory system, which caused his breathing problems to increase rapidly.
