January 31, 2025 (Dr Ashish Panwar): Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system is affected. In Guillain-Barré Syndrome, the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system of the body. Nowadays its cases have been seen in Pune, India, in which mainly elderly people are affected. In view of the increasing cases, health guidelines have been issued.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome
This is a serious neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. Initially Guillain-Barré Syndrome affects the lower part of the body, with weakness and tingling in the legs, followed by muscle weakness and paralysis if the condition is severe.
It is usually difficult to trace the cause of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, but most often it is caused by infection. Guillain-Barré Syndrome is mainly caused by bacterial infection, although it can also be viral.
Symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome
In most cases, symptoms of GBS appear quickly, although it can usually take a few days to weeks.
Tingling or numbness in the legs and arms: This is usually the first symptom that can be used to diagnose a case.
Muscle weakness: As the infection spreads, the condition worsens and muscle weakness can lead to paralysis.
Breathing difficulties: In severe cases, breathing difficulties may occur.
Pain: Muscle pain and cramps may also be observed.
Causes of Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Guillain-Barré syndrome is most often caused by bacterial infections, although it can also be viral.

Treatment Of Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Recovery in GBS can vary from time to time, but people usually recover slowly after treatment. Some people recover completely, while others may continue to have mild weakness or pain. In most cases, recovery can take months to years, and may require physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
