I’ve been having a headache for the past 4 days. Painkillers only help for a few hours and then the headache comes back. Should I be worried?
I had something very similar a few months ago, so I understand how frustrating it can be. At first, I assumed it was just because I wasn’t sleeping enough and was spending too much time in front of my laptop. I kept taking over-the-counter pain medicine whenever the headache became unbearable, but it would return after a few hours.
Eventually, I decided to visit my doctor because the headache wasn’t improving. After asking about my routine, stress levels, sleep schedule, and hydration, he felt it was probably related to tension headaches and eye strain rather than something serious. He advised me to drink more water, reduce screen time, improve my posture while working, and get proper sleep. Within a week, the headaches became much less frequent.
That being said, not every headache is harmless. If your headache is the worst you’ve ever experienced, comes on suddenly, is associated with high fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, weakness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, blurred vision, or if you’ve recently had a head injury, you shouldn’t wait. Those symptoms need immediate medical attention.
Since yours has already lasted four days and painkillers are only giving temporary relief, I personally wouldn’t keep self-medicating. Even if it’s something simple like sinusitis, migraine, stress, dehydration, or poor sleep, it’s better to have a doctor evaluate it rather than continuing painkillers for several more days.
Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but persistent headaches deserve proper evaluation instead of being ignored.
